Abstract
1,246,694. Glass-ceramic. CORNING GLASS WORKS. 13 Jan., 1969 [19 Jan., 1968]. No. 1898/69. Heading C1M. A glass-ceramic article (usually coloured) is formed by melting a batch for a silicate glass which contains no metal oxide that is reduced by elemental silicon or silicon monoxide, and to which 0À15-2% by weight elemental silicon has been added, or to which a reducing agent has been added so as to produce silicon monoxide and/or elemental silicon in an amount equivalent to 0.15-2% elemental silicon, simultaneously cooling the melt at least below the transformation range and shaping a glass body therefrom, and subsequently heating the body to 750-1400‹ C. to develop the in situ crystallization. The reducing agent may be sugar, dextrose, graphite or silicon carbide. The period of crystallization is preferably “-48 hours, preferably 2-8 hours at 750-900‹ C. followed by 2-12 hours at 1000-1300‹ C. The silicate glass preferably consists essentially of Li 2 O, MgO, Al 2 O 3 and SiO 2 or MgO, Al 2 O 3 and SiO 2 , together with 0.15-2% by weight elemental silicon. Examples of suitable glasses are given.
