Abstract

1287687 Cellulated glass CORNING GLASS WORKS 23 March 1970 [1 April 1969] 13878/70 Heading C1M A batch for making a cellulated glass body contains in weight per cent 10 to 20% total alkali metal oxide; 50 to 80% SiO 2 , 10 to 25% Al 2 O 3 ; with the SiO 2 to Al 2 O 3 ratio being between 3 : 1 and 6 : 1, the total of the flux, SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 comprising at least 93% of the foamed body. The body may be produced by shaping a batch comprising in weight per cent ion the anhydrous basis at least 50% of at least one rock that is volcanic ash, weathered volcanic ash and/or clay, at least one alkali metal containing material containing at least 25% by weight sodium hydroxide and/or sodium silicate, a cellulating agent which is carbon and/or a compound which decomposes below the cellulating temperature and has carbon as a thermal decomposition product, the total rock, alkalimetal containing material and cellulating agent comprising at least 75% by weight of the anhydrous batch. The balance consists of alumina or silica added to adjust the SiO 2 : Al 2 O 3 ratio and " grog " (reground fired batch material). The batch is pressed in a mould and then removed from the mould to a furnace where the pressed batch is fired at a temperature of between 800‹ and 950‹ C. for a period of between two and fifteen minutes. The foamed body retained the configuration of the pressed batch. The clay should preferably include montmorillonite, beidellite, beidellite and/or nontronite. At least 80% of the added alkali metal oxides should be Na 2 O, the remaining 20% being K 2 O and/or Li 2 O. The cellulating agent should comprise an amount of carbon such that carbon amounts to between 0À1 and 1% of the total batch. The volume coefficient of expansion of the cellulated glass bodies is in the range of 80 to 90 x 10<SP>-7</SP>/‹ C.
