Abstract

[Also in Divisions B1-B2] A method of making a protected metal sheet comprises applying a protective zinc coating 12 to a steel core 11 while the zinc is in a heated fluid condition and thereafter applying a fibrous glass cloth 13 thereto before the zinc has solidified and squeezing the resultant assembly between a pair of bonding rollers to partially embed the cloth in the molten zinc and to chill the molten zinc and cause it to solidify. In a preferred embodiment the glass cloth is then coated with a weather-resistant coating 16, e.g. an alkyd resin, a polyurethane resin, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl fluoride, a silicone-modified polyester resin, a paint or a lacquer, preferably after subjecting the zinc to a zinc-phosphate conversion treatment, e.g. with phosphonic acid. The cloth may be a woven fabric having uniformly spaced interstices between the warp and the woof threads and having- from 25 to 50 warp and woof threads per inch; alternatively, the cloth may be a fibre mat formed from randomly oriented continuous glass filaments bonded by starch or a resin, e.g. a polyester resin, an acrylic resin or an epoxy resin. The zinc may be admixed with aluminium or lead.
