Abstract
1,246,260. Image pick-up tubes; semiconductor targets. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 12 March, 1970 [15 March, 1969], No. 11912/70. Headings HID and H1K. The target of a camera tube comprising an n-type semi-conductor substrate provided with a mosaic of p-type regions 23 and with insulation 24 between the regions, is characterized by the provision of a resistive layer 25 formed of lead oxide having a resistance of 10<SP>12</SP>-10<SP>16</SP> ohms per square. In order to avoid capacitive effects the layer 25 should preferably be interrupted where it overlies the centres of the regions 23. The target may be supported at its edges by resilient mounting rings 16 and 17 disposed adjacent the end wall 5 and the cylindrical electrode 11 respectively, and a ring 19 provides electrical connection to a lead-in 20. Electrode processing.-Lead monoxide is vapourdeposited to a thickness not more than 0À2 microns in an atmosphere of equal parts of oxygen and hydrogen at 6 x 10<SP>-3</SP> Torr with the substrate at 120C. This provides a porous layer of mainly micro-crystalline tetragonal lead monoxide which exhibits only slight secondary emission. In order to provide gaps in the coating over the regions 23, the deposition may be made through a grating of parallel wires which covers these regions; the vapour deposition is performed in two different processes between which the grating is rotated through 90 degrees.
