Abstract
1,245,675. Electric heating cables. ISOPAD Ltd. 6 April, 1970 [15 May, 1969], No. 24841/69. Heading H5H. A flexible electrical heating tape or cable 10 for trace heating comprises a plurality of individually insulated heating element lengths 11, 12 arranged side-by-side with a spacer 13 between each pair of adjacent lengths, the element lengths and spacer(s) being held together by a close fitting protective sheath 14 of tougb braided material. Two elements are joined by a crimp 15 near one end of the cable, or a single length of insulated wire is doubled back on itself to form two parallel element lengths. With a three-phase supply, three elements and two spacers are laid side-by-side. Elements 11, 12 are insulated individually by PTFE sheathing covered by a silicone varnished glass braid. The spacer 13 is asbestos, glass roving, glass braiding or other high temperature resistant insulating material, or may be of conductive material, such as copper wire used as an earth conductor. Sheathing 14 is of toughened glass braid, silicone varnished, or is of metal braiding such as stainless steel, copper, or stainless steel and copper. Cold tails 17, 18, are attached to elements 11, 12, as in Specification 1,167,343, sleeves 19, 20 of irradiated plastics material being shrunk over the crimped joints as protection. A tag 21 is attached to the braided sheath 14 for securing and/or earthing the cable 10. Where elements 11, 12 separate from the sheath 14, a protective sleeve 22 of irradiated PTFE is shrunk over the cable, and a brass terminal gland 23 fitted over it.
