Abstract

1,245,075. Retractive switches; switch contacts. LITTON INDUSTRIES Inc. 15 May, 1969 [24 July, 1968], No. 24929/69. Heading H1N. A change-over contact assembly comprises a sliding contact element which is disengaged from respective fixed contact elements by at least one fixed cam adjacent the fixed contact element which acts on a follower secured to, or forming part of, the moving contact element to lift the latter before it reaches the end edge of the fixed contact element. As shown, a moving double-blade contact element has one leg 32 in continuous sliding connection with a fixed element 40, and a cam 44 is engaged by a follower 52 extending laterally from the other leg 30 to lift it off a contact surface 42 (extending laterally from a contact element 36) and on to a contact surface 38. A retractive push button switch using this contact arrangement (Figs. 5, 6 and 8, not shown) comprises an insulating cylindrical support (82) having axially extending. grooves (83) in its outer surface in which the fixed contact elements, such as 40, 36 and 38, are retained by an insulating cylindrical sleeve (90) fitted over the support and provided with axially extending slots (91) aligned with the grooves (83) to permit the moving contact elements 30, 32 to engage the fixed contact elements therethrough. One or more cams 44 for actuating the contacts are provided on some of the axially extending ribs between the slots (91) of the sleeve (90). In an alternative embodiment of switch (Fig. 7, not shown) the moving contact comprises a three-tongued blade wherein the central tongue (122) provides continuous connection while the outer tongues (123 and 124) act respectively as a " make " (as in Fig. 3, not shown) and a " break " (as in Fig. 4, not shown) thereby forming a change-over arrangement.
