Abstract

1,244,897. Controlling clutches. DOMINION ENG. WORKS Ltd. 1 Dec., 1969 [23 Dec., 1968], No. 58611/69. Heading F2L. Load sharing between, and prevention of overload of, two A.C. electric induction motors 17, 19 driving a common output member 11, e.g. in a grinding mill, through air controlled clutches 18, 181, is achieved during start up by starting the motors unloaded and then engaging the clutches and controlling their slip in accordance with the individual motor loadings to limit these loadings to a predetermined percentage, e.g. 175%, of normal full load. The clutches are controlled by controllers 24 which as shown receive amplified signals from electrical load sensors 30 in the motor stator inputs. Again, torque sensors may be attached to the motor stator, or the output shafts to the pinions 12, 13 driving the member 11. Alternatively, temperature sensing means may be utilized on the motor rotor. When the mill speed reaches that of the motors, i.e. clutch slippage ceases, the motor torque decreases to its full load value and the motor and mill accelerate together to their full load speed.
