Abstract
1,244,844. Specimen holder. J. FIELDING. Oct.28, 1968 [July 27, 1967], No.34649/67. Heading G2J. A specimen holder for determining colour which is used with an optical measuring instrument comprises a pair of translucent or transparent plates welded together, one of the plates being formed with a recess to provide a thin flat space in which is deposited a liquid specimen such as blood. A central aperture 13 passes through the plate 10 and surrounding the recess 11 is a first ridge 14; similarly a second ridge 15 borders the plate 10 and these ridges serve as energy directors for ultrasonic welding. The two plates 10, 16 which are made of polystyrene are cast or injection molded.. A spot of blood is dropped into the aperture 13 and spreads by capillary action through the space 17. A light source is placed behind the specimen holder and preferably using a green filter the intensity of light is calibrated using an optical instrument Fig.4 (not shown). A light filtering annular wedge (28) may be rotated adjacent the specimen in the space 17 until the two intensities passing through the wedge (28) and the specimen are identical. A straight wedge may be used instead of the annular wedge. The holder can also be used as a counting cell for use with a microscope or scanning instrument.
