An ice-breaker has an ice disperser fitted as an elongated projection at the bow, the disperser comprising cutter blades 1 held forwardly in the vertical plane by a frame 2 and port and starboard deflector plates 3 hingedly mounted on the underside of the hull 10. The embodiment shown has several flat triangular cutter blades, each having teeth in the leading and trailing edges. The movable deflector plates 3 are shown mounted in a parked inoperative position flush with the underside of the hull, from which position they are movable through an angle of 90 degrees to a position of readiness in which they project below the hull.
