Abstract

1,244,705. Boring earth and rock; wells &c. CHEVRON RESEARCH CO. 2 April, 1970 [2 April, 1969], No. 15778/70. Heading E1F; An apparatus for the thermally. assisted removal of a well liner 12 comprises a a spear 18 having a tubing tail 26 in fluid communication with a source 32 of hot fluid and a source 44 of fluid foam, via a bumper sub 22 and tubing string 24. The apparatus is lowered into the well by a hoist connected to an elevator 62 and the liner gripped by slips 20. A pull is exerted by the hoist and hot fluid (steam) injected through the string to heat the liner. If the liner is not freed from the well wall by thermal expansion, a thermal shock is applied by shutting off the steam and injecting a fluid foam down the tubes 24, 26 and the annulus 23. Fluid, which may be the foam, may be circulated before the steam is passed, to remove unwanted sand and well fluids.
