Abstract

[Also in Division G2] Compounds of the general formula where X is H, CH 3 , C 6 H 5 or Cl and Y is a pyridine, furan, 1 - benzyl - indole, thiophene or 5- methylthiophene residue, are made by reacting a p-aminophenol with an appropriate heterocyclic aldehyde to form a Schiffs base which is then reduced with sodium borohydride. Specified compounds are α-, #- and γ-(p-hydroxyanilinomethyl) - pyridine, # - (3 - methyl - 4- hydroxyanilinomethyl) pyridine, α - (p - hydroxyanilinomethyl) - furan, α - (3 - chloro- or -methyl - 4 - hydroxyanilinomethyl) furan, # - (3 - phenyl - 4 - hydroxy - anilinomethyl) furan, 1 - benzyl - 3 - (p - hydroxyanilinomethyl) indole, α - (p - hydroxyanilinomethyl) thiophene and 2 - (p - hydroxyanilinomethyl)- 5 - methylthiophene. The compounds are photographic developing agents (see Heading G2C).
