1,244,348. Fluorene derivatives. SANDOZ Ltd. 18 Nov., 1968 [6 Dec., 1967; 14 Feb., 1968; 20 Sept., 1968; 27 Sept., 1968], No. 54540/68. Heading C2C. Compounds of the general formula (R = isopropyl, sec.-butyl, tert. -butyl, 3-phenylpropyl or l-cyano.2-propyl; X=H, Y=OH or X+Y=O) and their salts are prepared by (a) reacting 4-hydroxyfluoren-9-one in free or alkali metal or ammonium salt form in an alkaline medium or 4-hydroxyfluoren-9-ol in the form of a mono-4-alkali metal or ammonium salt with epichlorhydrin or epibromhydrin and heating the product with RNH 2 , (b) reducing a compound of the formula (R<SP>1</SP>=R except 1-cyano-,2-propyl) with a complex alkali metal hydride or (c) catalytically hydrogenating a compound of the formula (R 1 =H or benzyl) or optionally followed by salt formation in each case. The above compounds are #-adrenergic blocking agents, and may be administered in the form of pharmaceutical preparations containing them in association with a carrier.
