Abstract

1,243,823. Sterilizing particulate material. W. LODIGE, F. LODIGE and J. LUCKE. 7 Oct., 1968 [10 Oct., 1967], No. 47370/68. Heading A2D. [Also in Division A5] Pulverulent and particulate materials are sterilized batchwise by treatment with hot gas or steam in a closed chamber whilst the material is subjected to vigorous mixing or agitation and, immediately thereafter, the sterilizing medium is removed by evacuation whilst the agitation is continued. Apparatus for performing the method is described which comprises a cylindrical container 1 having an axial shaft carrying a rotary mixing mechanism (not shown) driven by a motor 3. The container is provided with a closable filling mechanism 4, a vacuum connection 8, a closable expansion pipe 9, a pipe for admitting sterile air 10 and a discharge orifice closed by an electrically operable plug 17 and is surrounded by an insulating jacket 13 between which and the container a heating medium may circulate.
