Abstract

1,243,762. Making foundry moulds. SULZER BROS. Ltd. 12 March, 1970 [13 March, 1969], No. 11918/70. Heading B5A. [Also in Divisions B3 and C3] A foundry mould having a plurality of layers is made with at least the layer bounding the casting cavity formed of a mixture including particulate magnesium carbonate and colloidal hydrolysed silicic acid and the mould is then fired forming magnesium oxide and forsterite (2 MgO.SiO 2 ) from the magnesium carbonate and hydrolysed silicic acid. The ratio of magnesium carbonate to silicic acid (measured as SiO 2 ) is preferably 10 : 1 by weight. Silicon carbide may be coated on the invested layers after dipping and chemically stable fillers, e.g. zirconium oxide or periclase (MgO) may be incorporated in the investment mixture, preferably so that the forsterite containing layer comprises 30-40% forsterite.
