Abstract

1,243,631. Buffer store. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 18 Oct., 1968 [18 July, 1967], No. 32944/67. Heading G4C. The invention relates to a buffer store arrangement. A buffer store is formed of an endless array of data storage elements 10 which may be flip-flops and a second marker array 11 having the same number of elements as the endless array. Data is irregularly supplied to the head of a queue of data stored in array 10 and at the same time a "1" is stored in an element of array 11. The read in may be controlled by AND gates as shown in Fig. 2. The head of the array is identified by consecutive " 0," " 1 " stored in the marker array which enable AND gate A1 supplying input data to the appropriate element of array 10. The consecutive " 0," " 1 " also enable gate A m allowing the marker array element to be set. A similar set of gates allows the tail of the queue to be read out under the control of regulator clock pulses, the tail being identified by consecutive " 1," " 0 " and being read via gate D. A plurality of data storage of arrays may be coupled to the marker array so that multi-bit words may be stored. Alternatively, two marker arrays may be used, one array storing a single " 1 " to indicate the head of the queue, the other storing a single " 1 " indicating the tail of the queue. Data stored may be a digital representation of transmitted data such as television signals or multiplex telegraphy signals. To prevent the store from emptying extra picture samples may be generated and inserted in the store during low picture sampling rated, the insertion being determined by the queue length.
