1,243,478. Determining co-ordinates electrically. AGENCE NATIONALE DE VALORIZATION DE LA RECHERCHE. Dec. 31, 1969 [Dec. 31, 1968], No.63558/69. Heading GIN. The position of a pen 12, Fig. 1 on a rectangular writing plate 2 is determined by making the plate of resistive material and supplying it with X and Y equipotential lines by means of terminals 301 &c. located along each edge, pairs of opposite terminals being energized alternately with a D. C. voltage, controlled by a pulse generator 11 which cyclically energizes relays 7-10 to connect the terminals to the voltage source. The potentials picked up by the graphite tip of pen 12 are separated at 13 to be displayed on a CRO 15 or recorded. Minimum field distortion is obtained with rectangular terminals spaced such that the ratio terminal width to spacing is between 1:1 and 3:1. The resistive plate 2 may be transparent and located over a figure to be copied, or as the outer surface of the screen of a CRO, when the plate 19, Fig. 6, is circular and resistors 20, 21 are placed in series with the peripheral terminals 34 to obtain the same uniform current distribution as with a rectangular plate. The resistors 20, 21 may alternatively be the resistances between terminals37-40, Fig. 8, on four circles located as shown on an auxiliary, circular, resistive plate 35 and the peripheral terminals 36. The relays 7-10 may be replaced by an electronic switching arrangement Fig. 5, (not shown). An arrangement stated to produce an approximate gamma, # field co-ordinate distribution is described, Fig. 7 (not shown). The chosen point on the plate 2 may be selected by a finger pressing a conductive sheet 25, Fig. 9, into contact with the resistive layer 23.
