Abstract

1,243,225. Casting in flexible moulds. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. 27 Nov., 1968 [29 Dec., 1967], No. 56227/68. Heading B5A. Moulded articles are prepared in a mould comprising a flexible contoured mould member 1 attached to a rigid support member 2 to form an enclosed cavity 5 therebetween and an inlet 4 for supplying and removing fluid from the cavity. Fluid is supplied to cavity 5 to distend the flexible mould member and at least one coat 6 of liquid polymeric material which is flexible when cured and does not adhere tightly to the flexible mould, is formed on said mould. The flexible member is sucked against the rigid support member 2 and the polymer is cured. The moulded polymer article may then be ejected by distending the flexible mould member 1, but the article is preferably filled with foam by placing a foam precursor in the mould, closing the mould by cover 7 and an optional mounting bracket 8 and foaming. The foamed article 9 is again ejected by distending the flexible mould. The flexible mould may be made from silicone rubber, flexible polyurethane, natural or synthetic rubber, ethylene propylene copolymers optionally with other monomers or products of the open ring polymerization of unsaturated alicyclic compounds. It may be coated with a release agent such as polyethylene or polypropylene waxes, dimethyl silicone fluids, greases, fatty acids and vegetable compounds, soaps fluorocarbons, polyvinyl alcohol or fluorosilicone before use. The skin and foam of the moulded article are preferably both polyurethane.
