Abstract

1.243,219. Brightening organic materials. SOC. D'EXPLOITATION DES PROCEDES SUBLISTATIC. 24 July, 1968 [24 July, 1967], No. 35311/68. Headings D1B and D1P. [Also in Division B2] An organic material, e.g. a fabric or foil is optically brightened by printing a temporary support in the form of a sheet, strip or ribbon with a solution, emulsion or dispersion of an optical brightening agent which is heatstable up to 250‹C and vapourises at 150‹- 220‹C at atmospheric pressure and a binder or thickener which is heat-stable up to at least 250‹C and non-sublimable at the sublimation temperature of the brightener, drying the print, bringing the printed surface into contact with the organic material to be brightened and heating to above 150‹C for the time required to allow vapourisation and penetration of the optical brightening agent into the material to be brightened. The temporary support may be a sheet of nonporous or slightly porous paper, a sheet of aluminium the unprinted face of which may be glued onto a strip of strengthening paper, or a film of regenerated cellulose. The brightening agent may be a benzoxazole thiophene, a dibenzothiophene-S-dioxide which may contain amino group which may be acetylated, a coumarin, a pyrazoline, a mono-oxazole or bis-oxazole, numerous examples of which are given. Suitable thickeners are sodium alginate, carob or gum tragacanth, carboxymethyl cellulose, nitrocellulose or methyl, ethyl, hydroxyethyl or hydroxypropyl cellulose. The compositions used to apply the optical brightening agent and thickener or binder to the temporary support is preferably free from water and may contain methyl ethyl ketone and ethyl or isopropyl alcohol and may be applied by printing to the entire surface or locally. A dyestuff, e.g. 1-hydroxy-3-phenoxy-4-aminoanthraquinone, 1, 4-dimethylaminoanthraquinone, 4- (4'- methyl-2'-nitrophenylazo)-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone, the butyl or propyl ester or 1, 4-diaminoanthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid or 3- hydroxyquinophthalone, vapourisable in the same temperature range as the optical brightening agent may also be applied to the temporary support so that coloured patterns are produced. Heating of the temporary support in contact with the material to be brightened may be effected by means of an iron or pressing machine, heated plates or heated cylinders. Woven or knitted fabrics, veils, lawns, felts or carpets comprising cellulose acetate, polyacrylonitrile, polyethylene terephthalate, nylon, cotton or wool fibres may be brightened.
