Abstract

1,243,057. Polymerizing styrene in aq. suspension. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 14 Feb., 1969 [27 Feb., 1968], No. 9335/68. Heading C3P. Styrene is polymerized in aq. suspension, to form a polymer of average mol. wt. 30,000- 200,000, in the presence of an initiator mixture having at least 3 components under a continuously increasing programmed temperature in the range of 50‹ to 150‹ C., the first component having a half-life of 1-15 hours at 70‹ C. and less than 1 hour at 100‹ C., the second having a half-life of 1-15 hours at 100‹ C. and 1-4 hours at 115‹ C., and the third having a half-life of 15-30 hours at 100‹ C. and 0À1-10 hours at 130‹ C., and in the presence of a chain transfer agent e.g. t-dodecyl-mercaptan. The initiators may comprise (1) lauroyl peroxide, octanoyl peroxide, p-chlorobenzoyl peroxide, 2,4-dichlorobonzoyl peroxide, benzoyl peroxide or diisopropyl peroxy dicarbonate; (2) 1,1-di-t-butyl peroxy-3,5,5-trimethyl cyclohexane,t-butyl peracetate, cyclohexanone peroxide or t-butyl peroxyisopropyl carbonate; and (3) t-butyl perbenzoate, dicumyl peroxide, di-t-butyl peroxide or di-t-butyl perphthalate.
