Abstract

1,242,999. Colour cathode-ray display tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 2 June, 1970 [5 June, 1969], No. 26566/70. Heading H1D. A method of manufacturing a c.r.t. luminescent screen wherein the screen includes discrete luminescent areas of differently coloured emissions (e.g. red, green, blue) separated by particles of a light-absorbing substance comprises depositing the light absorbing substance electrophotographically. For the same contrast, the window glass tinting can be reduced or omitted. In fabrication, a conductive layer is provided on the support and superposed by a photoconductive layer charged by a corona discharge. The areas corresponding to luminescent areas are discharged by exposure and charged light absorbing particles adhered to the remaining areas. The luminescent areas may be similarly applied electrophotographically, using oppositely charged luminescent particles or alternatively, the conductive and p.c. layers removed by firing, the light absorbing material adhered by adhesive, and the luminescent surfaces provided by a photosensitive lacquer. In examples, the conductive layer of polyvinyl alcohol with choline chloride additions is dried, a polyvinyl carbazole photoconductive layer applied and charged negatively by a corona discharge, the layer exposed three times through a shadow mask, and a liquid containing positively charged particles of a light absorbing substance, e.g. MnO 2 , is applied adhering to the unexposed areas, the liquid decanted off and the screen dried. The p.c. layer is then charged positively, exposed, and positively charged luminescent material applied to the exposed areas.
