A toy vehicle 10 is adapted to move along a track under power of a constant speed electric motor 14 and to change speed as it passes over a switching track assembly. To enable the vehicle to change speed, there is provided first and second alternative gear trains for delivering power from the motor 14 to a wheel drive gear 32 which is rigidly secured to, and concentric with, rear drive wheels 12 and 16. Either gear train may be activated by a common idler gear assembly which is mounted on a pivotal arm 82, which rests against a second pivotal arm 54 which is pivoted about axle 24 and protrudes downward through a slot 56 in the underframe. The gear switching track includes an upwardly projecting ridge 58 that acts on arm 54, which raises arm 82, which is engaged in a second operating position by latching lever 60. To return the arm 82 to the first operating position, the track is provided with two upwardly projecting trip pins 78a and 78b, either of which is movable into a position to cngage the lower end of lever 60. This engagement turns lever 60 anti-clockwise until the bar 60a no longer engages bar 82a (shown in broken lines), and the arm 82 falls to its first position. The vehicle is maintained in a central position on the track by pin 28 which travels in slot 30 of the track.
