Abstract

1,242,435. Modifying surfaces of magnesium and alloys thereof; anodizing; electro-phoresis. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Dec.4, 1968 [Dec.4, 1967], No.57628/68. Headings C7A, C7B, C7E and C7U. A Mg or Mg base alloy (wt.% 3À0 Al, 0À5 Mn, 0À4 Zn balance Mg.) surface is coated by electro-- phoretically depositing a water soluble organic resin, and is pre-treated by cleaning and brightening and then contacting with an alkali metal hydroxide, an acid fluoride or an alkali metal or ammonium chromate. The cleaning process may be in a solution containing (wt.%) 6 sodium hydroxide and 1 trisodium phosphate. The brightening process may be mechanical or chemical using a 50 vol. % acetic acid 12% by weight sodium nitrate solution or 50 vol.% hydroxyacetic acid, 12% by weight sodium nitrate solution. The Mg may also be anodized, during passiration, using the Mg as the anode and a lead or carbon cathode with A. C. or D.C. The fluoride may be HF, NH 4 HF 2 , KHF 2 or NaHF 2 . The chromate may be Na or K dichromate dihydrate or K or NH 4 dichromate. The alkali metal hydroxide solution may contain an oxidizing agent e.g. Na nitrate, nitrite, chromate or phosphate. The resin may be polycarboxylic acid derivatives of alkyd, acrylic, epoxy or polyester resin paints. The resin coating may be subsequently baked.
