Abstract

1,242,316. Treating textiles. F. W. J. KARRER. 17 Jan., 1969 [18 Jan., 1968; 25 March, 1968], No. 2798/69. Heading D1L. [Also in Division F4] A method of treating (e.g. dyeing, bleaching and washing) and drying fibrous or filamentary material, e.g. spools 7 on perforated tubes 6, in a substantially closed container 1 in which two chambers 3 and 8 are formed and which communicate with each other through the material, comprises, as the drying procedure, the steps of establishing and maintaining a pressure difference between the chambers to cause a gaseous drying agent to pass through the material, e.g. by pump 4, simultaneously introducing in the initial stage of the drying procedure, air from conduit 9 and superheated steam from conduit 11 into the chamber 8 to partially dry the material by a mechanical action and to preheat the material to a temperature facilitating later drying by evaporation, and in the final drying stage introducing heated air with or without steam into the chamber 8 to further dry the material by evaporation of the moisture therein. In the initial drying stage substantially all of the superheated steam is condensed in the material. In the process described with reference to Fig. 2 the material is dyed, washed, bleached and dried. The container 21 (Fig. 2) is substantially the same as the container 1 (Fig. 1). In the process container 21 is initially evacuated by pump 52. Dye from container 22 is sucked into container 21 and this dye is then circulated through the material and heat exchanger 27 by pump 29. During the dyeing step alternate positive and negative pressures may be applied to container 21 by pump 52. When the material has been dyed the dye is forced through conduits 30, 43 and 44 to be discharged or through conduit 37 to container 22. The material is washed by sucking water from conduit 46 through the material and discharging it to water separator 54. The material is then bleached with agent (e.g. hypochlorite) from container 23, the bleaching being carried out in a manner similar to the dyeing step. The material is dried in two steps by firstly using cool air from conduit 50 and superheated steam from conduit 58 and then using hot air with or without steam. The material may be heated during the bleaching process by the introduction of steam and hot or cold air into the container 21. Air may also be introduced into the chamber 21 at the end of the dyeing process.
