Abstract

1,242,206. Laminates. P.P.G. INDUSTRIES Inc. 30 Jan., 1970 [31 Jan., 1969; 31 Dec., 1969], No. 4461/70. Heading B5N. [Also in Division G1] A lamina structure 15, Fig. 2, comprising a layer of cholesteric-phase liquid-crystal material 17 sandwiched between two flexible transparent plastics layers 16, 18 is temporarily fixed to a windscreen G, Fig. 1, by an adhesive layer 19, so that defective heating elements 12 embedded in, or on the surface of, the windscreen, can be located-operative heating elements 11 causing a colour change in the liquid crystals. Preferably the liquid crystals have a colour range of from 20‹ to 30‹ C. which can be achieved by using appropriate mixtures, for example of cholesteryl myristate and cholesteryl butyrate. Alternatively, in order to cover a large temperature range, the layer of liquid crystals may consist of strips of different liquid crystal material having different temperature ranges.
