Abstract
1,242,119. Axial-flow pumps. BABCOCK & WILCOX CO. Sept.16, 1968 [Sept.15, 1967], No.43990/68. Heading F1C. A pump, e.g. for circulating coolant in a nuclear reactor, comprises an annular one-way valve formed by a row of stationary pivotal vanes 19 positioned upstream of an impeller 18. The vanes are shown in their closed position, but they will be opened by the forward flow when the pump is operated. If the flow through the pump should reverse due, e.g., to failure of the pump when connected in parallel with similar pumps, the vanes will close. The vanes abut one another in their closed position and abut stops 40 in their open positions in which they guide the forward flow axially of the pump. The radially outer ends of the vanes are curved to correspond to the curvature of the inner surface of surrounding wall 20A. The radially inner end of each vane is straight and extends substantially perpendicular to the pivotal axis of the vane. There may be eight vanes and the outer surface of a central tubular member 15 may be octagonal so that each flat surface thereof cooperates with the adjacent straight end of a respective vane. The vanes may be hollow or solid.
