Abstract
1,242,101. Crash barriers. P. E. L. A. GRAVISSE. 4 Sept., 1968, No. 42087/68. Heading E1G. A crash barrier comprises a series of contiguous front blocks 14 and rear blocks 23 lying alongside a roadway and having opposed plane faces 18, 25 enclosing an acute angle wholly or partly filled with compressible substance 27, the rear blocks 23 having bores 24 for a connecting cable; on impact the front and rear blocks are free to slide horizontally or up an inclined surface 11 towards a stop girder 13. The front blocks 14, Fig. 7, are coupled by short steel cylinders 22 and an optional cable. The front and rear blocks may have interengaging pivoted formations 19, 29 and may be movably interconnected by stirrups 33, Fig. 10. In a modification, Figs 5, 6 (not shown) the underside of each block (14) is shaped to cooperate with a raised formation (30) to lift the block as it is tilted on impact. (For Figures see next column)
