Abstract

1,242,018. Hydraulic braking systems. GIRLING Ltd. 23 June, 1970 [27 June, 1969], No. 32557/69. Heading F2F. In an hydraulic braking system for use in tractors in which the brake cylinders on each side are selectively actuated by separate pedaloperated master cylinders, the two pedals 10, 11 may be latched by a latch 12 the movement of which opens a normally closed valve 22 to allow fluid to flow freely between pressure lines 26, 27 associated respectively with each master cylinder to compensate for unequal braking caused by different wear rates on opposite sides of the tractor. In the embodiment shown the latch 12 is manually pivoted on a pin 14 rotatably mounted in pedal 10 and carrying an eccentric 15 to engage a notch 13 in pedal 11, a length of chain wrapped round the eccentric being attached to an anchorage 17 on pedal 10 and a Bowden cable 18 which moves a plunger 31 of valve 22 causing normally seated balls 28 to unseat and establish communication between lines 26, 27. In another embodiment the latch 12 is keyed on a rotatably mounted pin 38, Fig. 5 (not shown), the lower end of which has a key and slot engagement with a rotatable valve member (39) in the valve body. Alternatively a plunger (46) working in the valve may have an extension (53) projecting from the valve body engaging the latch when moved into its locked position, the plunger being moved to open ball valves. The latch may be of the sliding bolt type.
