Abstract

1,241,791. Filling containers. GKN SANKEY Ltd., and P. F. ASTBURY. 1 July, 1968 [7 July, 1967], No. 31521/67. Headings B8C and B8T. An apparatus for filling flexible containers with sterilized cream or milk under sterile conditions comprises a filling head 17 slidably mounted on a support 13 above a forked support 21 to engage the neck of the container. The filling head 17 comprises an outer cylinder 27 in which is slidably mounted a piston 28 attached to a sleeve 29. Mounted in the sleeve 29 is a cylinder 44 having a probe 53 at its lower end on which is slidably mounted a sleeve valve 49 which is urged downwardly by a spring 48 which can cover parts 58 in probe 53. In operation, the container is placed, in a collapsed state, on support 21 and the operation may proceed automatically. The filling head is lowered by means of an hydraulic ram 24 until the neck is in sealing engagement with the head. Steam is passed along conduit 39 to sterilize those parts of the container and apparatus inside the enclosure formed by the head and neck which had been exposed to the air. The steam supply is then cut off by one of the timing clocks 16 and air pumped through port 25 to lower cylinder 44 and probe 53, thereby exposing ports 58 and opening a poppet valve 73 in the neck of the container. Sterile liquid is passed down conduit 54 to fill the container which initially was collapsed and which had been sterilized by irradiation. When the container is full cylinder 44 and probe 53 are raised by passing air through port 20, valves 73 and 49 closing by action of springs 75 and 48 respectively. Hot water is then passed along conduit 39 to wash away liquid residue, followed by a blast of air for drying, timing clocks again controlling the flow. The head 17 is then raised, the container removed, and another container introduced for the next filling cycle.
