Abstract

1,241,631. Vanadium suboxides. TEEG RESEARCH Inc. 24 March, 1969, No. 15202/69. Heading C1A. Vanadium suboxide having the general formula VOx, where x is between 1À50 and 2.02 is prepared in bulk or single crystal form by heating vanadium pentoxide to a temperature of from 400‹ C. to 800‹ C. under a pressure of 10<SP>-1</SP> to 10<SP>-6</SP> mm. Hg. while controlling the oxygen pressure over the vanadium pentoxide. The oxygen pressure may be controlled by means of a " getter ", e.g. vanadium sesquioxide or alternatively the vanadium pentoxide is evaporated in a container while evacuating the container until vanadium suboxide remains. Where V 2 O 3 is used as the getter, it may be present in stoichiometric amount to combine with the V 2 O 5 to give the desired suboxide.
