1,241,459. Oxidation process. PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO. 24 Dec., 1968 [26 Dec., 1967; 21 Oct., 1968], No. 61360/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] Organic compounds are oxidized or oxidatively dehydrogenated in the gaseous phase by a free oxygen-containing gas in the presence of an iron phosphate catalyst containing an amount of phosphorus of from 1.001 to 5 times the stoichiometric amount required to form orthophosphate (P0 4 ) ions with all the iron present and to give an oxygen to phosphorus atomic ratio in the catalyst of from 3 : 1 to 3À999 : 1. The iron may be present in the ferric, ferrous or ferrosoferric state, and the catalyst may be supported, e.g. on silica, alumina, boria, magnesia, titania, zirconia, silica-alumina, boriaalumina or silica-magnesia. Many starting materials are mentioned, as are the following specific conversions: butenes and/or butadiene to furan and acetaldehyde; pentenes and/or pentadienes to furfural, acetaldehyde and acetic acid; methacrolein to methacrylic acid; and 2-methyl-5-ethyl-pyridine to 2-methyl-5- vinyl-pyridine. In examples,' butadiene is oxidized to furan and acetaldehyde, and 2- methyl-butene-2 to furfural, acetaldehyde and acetic acid.
