Abstract

1,241,447. Treating textiles. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 7 July, 1969 [4 July, 1968], No. 31925/68. Heading D1P. [Also in Division C3] Fibres or textiles (Q) are treated with polycondensates (P) obtained by (1) condensing an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid with a hydroxypolyoxyalkylene compound and an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic amino-acid, lactam, and/or diamine, and then (2) reacting the product with HCHO and a C 1 -C 4 aliphatic alcohol. (Q) is treated with (P) and an acid catalyst and subjected to heat e.g. 120-220‹C, (P) and the catalyst may be dissolved or dispersed in H 2 O and/or an organic solvent e.g. CHCl=CCl 2 . Based on wt of article, 0.1-5% wt of (P) may be applied. (Q) may be nylon, polyethylene terephthalate, acrylonitrile (co)polymers, cellulose triacetate, glass, keratin or natural cellulosic material, and the articles may be filaments, fibres, or textiles, rovings yarns, non-woven, woven, or knitted fabrics. The acid catalyst for the treatment may be water-soluble, e.g. (COOH) 2 , ZnCl 2 , (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 , NH 4 Cl, amine salts, MgCl 2 , NH 4 CNS; or water-soluble, e.g. (COOH) 2 , ZnCl 2' (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 , dodecylbenzene-sulphonic acid, 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)butylphosphoric acid, methyl ptoluenesulphonate, cetylpyridinium bromide, stearamidomethylpyridinium chloride, methanesulphonyl chloride or fluoride, benzene sulphonyl chloride, p-toluenesulphonyl chloride or fluoride, and/or m-benzenedisulphonyl chloride. Application may be by dipping, impregnation, spraying, or by brush, furnishing roller, or squeegee, at from ordinary temperature to 50‹C; after application the article may be dried at from ordinary temperature to 120‹C. Also applied may be known cross-linking agents or resinous condensates e.g. dimethyloldihydroxyethyleneurea resin, carboxymethylcellulose or hydroxylalkyl ethers of cellulose or starch. After treatment the article may be washed and dried. The treated articles have improved fullness, warmth to the touch, moisture absorbency, and have diminished tendency to become electrified and to soil.
