Abstract

In apparatus of the type described in Specification 1,167,718, the material to be cooled is transported through at least one of the zones by placing the material on a surface and moving the surface in such a way as to impart motion to the material relative to the surface. The latter may be a substantially horizontal tray or platform which is vibrated to provide a slow forward and rapid return movement; an inclined vibratory tray may alternatively be used. The tray may be mounted in or form part of an insulated chamber. The surface may alternatively comprise the inner surface of an inclined conduit which is rotated about its longitudinal axis. Refrigerant spray headers and fans may be provided within the conduit or the conduit may be made of perforated or mesh material and located in an insulated casing which contains the headers and fans.
