Abstract
1,240,897. Electric differential thermal analysis. NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR METALLURGY. Sept.17, 1968 [Sept. 21, 1967], No. 44043/68. Heading G1N. In differential thermal analysis, the temperatures of a test substance and a reference substance are varied at the same rate and the temperature of the test substance, the temperature difference between the substances and the difference in power consumption between the substances are recorded. Any desired gap may be set between the temperatures of the two substances and this gap may be adjusted so that onset of crystallization occurs simultaneously in both substances. As shown in Fig. 2, the reference and test substances are located at the junctions of reference and test thermocouples 76 and 80 respectively. Heating current is supplied to the thermocouples 76, 80 during positive half cycles of an A.C. supply 32. The heat supplied to the reference thermocouple 76 is controlled by an S.C.R. 38 whose firing angle is controlled by a programme unit 40 and the heat supplied to the test thermocouple 80 is controlled by an S. C. R. 48 whose firing angle is controlled in dependence on the difference between the e. m.f. s of the thermocouples 76, 80, which is measured during the negative half cycles of the A.C. supply. Vacuum sealed thermocouples 44, 52 are connected in series with the reference and test thermocouples respectively and the difference between the e. m. f. s of the vacuum sealed thermocouples is amplified during negative half cycles and recorded as the difference in heat consumption between the substances. Also during negative half cycles synchronous contacts connect the e.m.f. of thermocouple 80 and the difference between the e.m.f.s s of thermocouples 76 and 80 to the recorder 30. In another arrangement, Fig. 5 the firing angles of the heat controlling S.C.R.s 38À1, 48À1 are controlled so as to keep the e. m.f. s of the reference and test thermocouples equal to that generated by a programme unit 284. An adjustable source 290 allows any desired temperature difference between the substances to be set. Hall generators 44À1, 52À1 are used to measure the square of the heating current. Heat shields. The reference and test thermocouples may be shielded to avoid heat losses by heating filaments (272, 274) maintained at the same temperatures as the thermocouples by S. C. R.s (280, 282).
