An AC solenoid (Figs. 1, 3) comprises a C-shaped stator 20 of iron laminations, having a bight 42 and poles 44, enclosing a coil 22 wound on a rectangular flanged bobbin 64, the bight being located upon the surface for device to be actuated and apertured at 48 to receive a push pin abutting a steel insert of the shank 50 of a T-shaped armature 24 moving axially of the coil. Shading coils 52 are provided in the surfaces of the core poles, on the faces of which the arms of the armature abuts when the coil is energized. Connection prongs 26 are carried by pins 72, 74 retained by notched plastic embracing members 80, 82 and soldered to the coil winding and connected (Fig. 4) to a lampbulb indicating coil energization. The core, coil, bobbin and connection pins are encapsulated in a block 28 of thermosetting epoxy resin by casting or transfer or vacuum moulding, and the block is drilled to receive diagonally opposed screws 36 retaining a plastic cap 30 with a translucent window, and other diagonally opposed screws attaching the solenoid to the device to be actuated. A cylindrical aperture 98 of the cap has sealing 0-rings 100, 102 retaining a headed manual actuator pin 32, and forming a resilient compressible member cushioning the de-energization backstroke of the plunger.
