Abstract

1,240,486. Packaging. BOWATER PACKAGING Ltd. 17 July, 1969 [17 July, 1968], No. 34013/68. Heading B8C. In a method of securing a lid 3 to a foil container 1, after it has been filled with food and the lid 3 has been deposited on an outwardly-turned ledge 5 which is bordered by an upstanding rim 7, the container 1 is lowered on a platform 13 into a base 11 as a vertically reciprocable lidding head 23 is also lowered to press the ledge 5 against the upper surface 25 of the base 11 and cause the rim 7, which may have been deformed out of the vertical, to assume a vertical position as it enters a spring- loaded correcting gate 19. Further downward movement of the lidding head 23 presses the gate 19 downward against springs 21, a chamfered edge 31 on the head 23 first bending the rim 7 inwardly for subsequent clamping between a horizontal step 33 on the head 23 and the upper base surface 25 to sandwich the edge of the lid 3 between the ledge 5 and the horizontal rim 7. With the lidding operation completed, the platform 13 and the head 23 are raised, the container 1 being removed from the platform 13 and the sequence being repeated. A lidded container may be pushed vertically into, and through, a static connecting gate at one work station and then passed to a second station where the rim can be finally folded inwardly.
