Abstract

1,239,951. Powder coating. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 15 April, 1969 [30 April, 1968], No. 20468/68. Heading B2E. A powder coating process comprises applying to a heated article a first coating of a vinyl chloride polymer powder composition having a B.S. softness of at least 25, applying a second coating of a vinyl chloride polymer powder composition having a B.S. softness of less than 20 to the coated substrate while the first coating is in a tacky, heat softened, partially fused state and then heating to fuse the second coating. The compositions comprise vinyl chloride polymers or copolymers and plasticises and may include fillers, stabilisers and pigments and these compositions may be applied by electrostatic powder spraying or dipping in a fluidised bed. Adhesion of the coatings to the substrate may be improved by the inclusion of an epoxy resin and a hardener and to prevent premature curing it is preferred that the hardener is incorporated in the first coating and the resin in the second as described in Specification 1,239,952. Substrates coated by the method include wire meshes or grids, plate racks, tool handles and jigs and formers for use in electroplating.
