Abstract

1,238,849. Cooling reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 21 Oct., 1968 [30 Oct., 1967], No. 49238/67. Heading G6C. In a nuclear reactor coolant channel, the coolant water flowing within the pressure tube 1 is provided with a vortex motion so as to urge steam bubbles away from the fuel elements, 2, to prevent dry-out. The helical baffle 3, mounted on the pin 4, induces a free vortex flow through the passages 2a such that the resultant radial pressure gradient forces the steam bubbles at the fuel rod surfaces radially inwards towards the central axis.
