In an arrangement for tracing characters &c. on the screen of a cathode-ray tube by means of appropriate X, Y deflection waveforms the latter are produced by combining harmonics of the sine and cosine phases of a fundamental sinusoidal oscillation in proportions determined by Fourier synthesis, the combining being effected at a summation point which, for each co-ordinate deflection waveforms X, Y, includes a transformer in the primary of which the harmonics appropriate to the respective deflection waveform are combined and one end of the secondary of which is connected to the input of the respective deflection amplifier via an OR gate whilst the other end of the secondaries of both transformers are connected to a character selection (transistor) switch. Thus, as shown, the outputs of fundamental frequency sine and cosine wave generators 1 and 6 respectively and of the 2nd to 5th harmonics of the sine wave, generators 2 to 5 respectively and the 2nd to 5th harmonics of the cosine wave, generators 7 to 10 respectively, are supplied to respective transformers 11 from the secondaries of which voltages having the required polarities (determined by the sense of the secondary windings) and the required mag- -nitude (determined by resistors 13 to 23) are combined in the primary windings of respective transformers 27, 28 the secondary windings of which are connected to the X and Y deflection amplifiers 33, 34 through respective OR gates 31, 32 and via weighting resistors 35, 36, the magnitudes of which are determined by the coefficient of the first term of-the Fourier series, to a character selection transistor 37.
