Abstract
1,238,225. Resistor composition. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 5 Dec., 1968 [21 Dec., 1967], No. 57750/68. Heading C1M. [Also in Divisions F1 and H1] A spark plug resistor composition 32 comprises glass of softening temperature 1500- 1750‹ F., an inert filler and zinc, antimony or tellurium powder. A preferred composition is: Glass: 20-75 wt. per cent. Inert Filler: 15-79À3 wt. per cent. Semiconductor material: 0-60 wt per cent. Carbon Black: 0À1-4À0 wt per cent. Inorganic Binder (e.g. Bentonite): 0-3 wt. per cent. Water soluble charable carbon containing material: 0À1-4 wt. per cent. Zinc, Antimony (Tellurium): 2-15 (0À5-5) wt. per cent. The inert filler may be kyanite, borolon, ZrO 2 , mullite or chromium oxide. The water-soluble charable carbon containing material may be dextrin, sucrose, methyl cellulose, corn flour, polyvinyl alcohol or glycerine. The glass is preferably barium borate glass (examples given). The semi-conductor may be TiO 2 -ZrO 2 ; Ta 2 O 5 -ThO 2 ; Ta 2 O 5 -CeO 2 ; Ta 2 O 5 -Di 2 O 4 ; or the oxides of Ti, Sn, Ta, V, Mo and W. The spark plug 10 may be made by positioning centre electrode 24 (e.g. of Ni) in the centre bore 18 of insulator 16 (e.g. of Al 2 O 3 ) and ramming down the granulated resistor composition 32 above it. A conductive glass seal 36 (e.g. of Cu and Zn and a borosilicate glass) is added on top and terminal screw 30 positioned within the assembly, which is then heated to, e.g. 1550-1750‹ F. to soften the glass and melt the metal, which metal 34 coats the electrode 24. Screw 30 is then tightened. The formed assembly is then assembled inside metal shell 12 to form the plug.
