Abstract

1,238,178. Moulding sheet material; laminates. TAKIRON KAGAKU K.K. 21 Aug., 1968, No. 40095/68. Headings B5A and B5N. Resinous sheet material is simultaneously surface finished, e.g. embossed, and laminated by pressing it between members heated by the passage of a direct or alternating electric current. In one embodiment (see Fig. 2, not shown), thermoplastic sheet material comprising a plurality of individual layers is pressed between polished and/or embossed metal plates backed by coolable platens and connected in series to a suitable current source. In operation, the plates are first pressed lightly against the sheet material and are then heated to the required temperature after which the current is discontinued. The plates are then pressed firmly against the material and the platens cooled to set the pressed material. Finally, the cooling is discontinued and the platens retracted to allow removal of the sheet. In an alternative embodiment the sheet material is passed between a pair of metal bands, each of which is backed by a coolable press platen, the bands being connected in series and to a source of power by shoes which contact opposite edges of the bands. In operation, the sheet is indexed between the platens by the belts, the belts stopped the pressing effected as described above, and the bands restarted to index the pressed sheet from between the platens. PVC sheets may be laminated together in this manner and polypropylene cover sheets may be laminated to a plywood core in similar fashion.
