Abstract

1,237,875. Electro-machining. ASSOCIATED ENG. Ltd. Oct. 8, 1968 [Aug. 14, 1967], No.37189/67. Heading C7B. [Also in Division H2] Electro-chemical machining apparatus M, e.g. for deburring metal workpieces or shaping metal workpieces, has a test circuit which is operated prior to starting a machining operation to detect any direct or indirect metallic contact between the tool T and workpice W and to prevent operation if such metallic contact is present. The test circuit comprises a transistor TR1 having its base connected to an intermediate point on a potential divider Dl, R1, R2 connected across the supply lines of a low voltage D. C. supply from a transformer T1 and rectifier X1. Normally the transistor TR1 is in its conducting state so that a relay RL is energized, closing its contacts RL/1 in the power supply circuit to the machining apparatus. The workpiece W and tool T are connected across the diode D1 and resistor R1 so that if before starting a machining operation metallic contact exists between the tool and workpiece, the voltage between the base and emitter of the transistor TR1 is reduced causing the transistor to cut-off and the relay RL to release to prevent operation. If the test is satisfactory the transistor remains conducting and a slow-to-operate relay SC opens its contacts C to interrupt the test circuit to the workpiece. The machining current can then be switched on. An indicator lamp may indicate that a fault exists.
