Abstract

991,304. Welding by pressure. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 11, 1962 [Dec. 14, 1961], No. 46734/62. Heading B3R. In a stud welding device in which a solenoidoperated switch is connected in the welding supply circuit to be energized by a switching on contact and de-energized if the voltage across the parts to be welded falls below a predetermined low value the welding voltage or a voltage derived therefrom is supplied to two parallel branches, one branch comprising the energizing coil of an auxiliary relay and the other branch comprising the series arrangement of the coil of the switch, the switching on contact and a contact of the relay, the latter contact being connected by a holding contact of the switch. A low voltage supply device 2, Fig. 1, is connected to a stud welding gun 5 and to the work 6 via a switch 3 operated by a solenoid coil 4 connected to the positive side of a rectifier 7 connected across the device 2. The coil is connected via a solenoid switch 9 and starting contact 10 in the gun to the negative side of the rectifier. In operation the rectifier 7 energizes the coil 8 of the switch 9 to close the switch. Operation of switch 10 energizes coil 4 to close switch 3 and apply welding voltage to the workpieces. A holding contact 11 is also closed and the switch 9 opens since the coil 8 is shortcircuited by switch 10. When the weld is formed the voltage across the workpieces is so low that rectifier 7 is short-circuited and coil 4 is de-energized to open switch 3. In a modification the coil 4 is supplied from a rectifier 23, Fig. 2, connected across the device 2 and in series with the switch 9 of the coil 8 and a contact 22 of a further solenoid switch which is provided in a parallel circuit across the device 2. The further solenoid switch comprises a coil 20 supplied from rectifier 7, the normally closed switch 22 and a normally open switch 21. In operation the coil 20 is energized from rectifier 7 to close switch 21 and open switch 22, thus energizing relay 8 to close switch 9. On closing switch 10 the relay 20 is short-circuited to open its switch 21 and close its switch 22. The condenser 13 across coil 8 retains contact 9 closed while coil 4 is energized to close switches 3 and 11. After welding is completed coil 4 is short-circuited and switch 3 opens.
