[Also in Division H2] A percussive arc welding system wherein two workpieces E1 E2 are to be welded together, the piece E2 being held in a fixed member and the piece E1 in a movable member S has the movement of the member S controlled by the solenoid windings W1, W2, the winding W1 being energized to initiate movement of the member S; and hence the electrode E1 towards the electrode E2 until a position is reached at which the potential between the pieces E1, E2 causes an arc to be struck therebetween, the arc current then flowing through the winding W2 so causing the member S to move rapidly to impact the piece E1 on the piece E2. Capacitors C1, C2 are maintained charged from an A.C. supply and operation of a push-button PB1 energizes relay RLY from the same supply to change the positions of contacts 1, 2; the movement of contact 2 taking place before that of contact 1. Contact 2 is effective to connect capacitor C2 to the member S to provide potential between electrodes E1 E2 and to subsequently energize winding W2 and contact 1 causes windings W1 to be energized by capacitor C1. A reversing switch K1 is provided to allow either the electrode E1 or E2 to function as the anode electrode of the welding circuit.
