Abstract
1,237,864. Magnetographic recording. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. Aug.14, 1968 [Aug.22, 1967; March 29, 1968], Nos.38517/67 and 15191/68. Heading G1N. A method of magnetographic flaw testing comprises applying a recording medium to the specimen while it is magnetized and subsequently treating the recording medium to produce a visible record of the pattern of magnetization. A grooved specimen 1 may be rubbed with soap (to facilitate stripping) and covered with a layer 3 of "magnetic sensing paint" followed by a backing 4 of tough vinyl paint, or conventional adhesive tape. The specimen is magnetized in any convenient manner and the recording sheet removed, flattened, and treated with magnetic ink which is fixed by lacquer. Alternatively the magnetic ink may be applied to the backing layer 4 while it is on the specimen. In another embodiment Fig. 3, portable apparatus for testing e.g. a railway track comprises an electromagnet 8 with a resilient pad 13 mounted between the poles carrying the recording sheet 14. (This sheet may be formed by painting a sheet of glass and stripping when dry). The electromagnet is energized by a pulse from a capacitor mounted in the handle together with charging batteries. The recording sheet is then inked and pressed on absorbent paper to produce a permanent record, after which the magnetic record may be erased leaving the apparatus ready for further use.
