Abstract

1,237,785. Polymerizable compositions for dental use. KULZER & CO. G.m.b.H. 6 Aug., 1968 [19 Aug., 1967], No. 37428/68. Heading C3P. Dental fillers or fixatives comprise (1) a liquid addition polymerizable monomer, (2) a powdered polymer, (3) 0À1-5% by weight (based on the liquid monomer) of at least one hydroperoxide of the formula ROOH in which R is C 3 -C 12 alkyl, or a compound from which such a hydroperoxide is formed in situ (e.g. a perester), and (4) a Redox type catalyst which is effective to polymerize the monomer and which does not comprise an alkyl hydroperoxide as specified in (3). Exemplified as components (1) and (2), respectively, are methyl methacrylate monomer and polymer. The hydroperoxide (3) preferably contains up to 7 carbon atoms; a suitable perester precursor is tri-t-butyl peroxyborate. Redox catalyst (4) is suitably a combination of a peroxide, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, and either a tertiary amine or a reducing sulphur compound, e.g. dimethyl-p-toluidine or a sulphinic acid. The compositions may optionally contain additional components, e.g. a regulator such as dodecyl mercaptan; fillers such as glass or quartz beads, optionally surface-treated with silanes, and also fibres; and, as an agent for protecting tooth pulp against toxic effects of various components of the compositions, boric acid or a boron compound which releases boric acid in situ, e.g. tributyl borate or trioctyl borate.
