Abstract

1,237,702. Electroluminescence. C. A. STEWARD, and C. C. CLOGSTOUN, [trading as RESIN MAPS & SIGNS]. 23 May, 1969 [26 Feb., 1968], No. 9279/68. Heading C4S. A panel comprises an electroluminescent element completely encapsulated in translucent synthetic resin (e.g. acrylic, epoxy or melamine resin preferably a polyester resin) laid up with a layer of glass fibres, such that the fibres sink into the resin, the panel being made by positioning the element on a fluid resin layer, applying a second resin layer, a layer of glass fibres having been laid up with one of the layers, and solidifying (e.g. curing) the fluid resin. In an embodiment, with a frame on glass, positioned in turn is, a layer of fluid resin forming the front surface, a layer of chopped strand glass fibres, a further resin layer, an EL element with electrodes, a third resin layer and further chopped strand glass fibres, rolling during laying up excluding bubbles. In a road sign, a resin layer, plastics base overlay paper or glass. fibre cloth and an opaque and/or semi-opaque written and/or illustrative legend sheet precedes the above. Choice of elements provides required colour, applications include steps, harbour walls, kerbs and obstructions, and electrical safety under moist conditions is mentioned.
