In an internal shoe drum brake the brake carrier 19 is so constructed that constructional units 1 provided with a pre-assembled brake operating device can be inserted in an axial direction from the exterior of the brake carrier and are received in an enclosed cut-out 18 on the carrier, the unit having a peripheral collar or rim 2 which corresponds to the shape of the cutout and locates the unit on the carrier. As shown, a sleeve 3, provided with the collar 2, carries a brake actuating cylinder 4 having an operating rod 6 acting in a hollow part 7 of a push rod 8 the fork 9 of which carries three rollers 11 acting on drag levers 12 pivoted on the sleeve; the running surfaces 13 of the levers are provided with tracks 14 each so disposed as to be engageable by only one roller. A lever 15 connects the push rod 8 with a hand brake. In a braking operation, the levers 12 are moved outwardly to apply the shoes to the brake drum. In a modification, a unit carrying a brake cylinder is secured in the cut-out in the brake carrier.
