Abstract
1,237,290. Controlling mixing by viscosity. COX'S MACHINERY Ltd. 30 Jan., 1970 [24 Feb., 1969], No. 9848/69. Heading B1C. [Also in Division G3] An impeller, supported by a head so as to be within a container holding constituents to be mixed under impurity-free conditions, is driven by a hydraulic motor supplied with fluid by a displacement pump the volume of which is automatically adjusted in dependence on the pressure of fluid applied to the motor. In Fig. 2, a head 3 supports an impeller 7 driven by a hydraulic motor 8 to mix constituents such as paint, ink, glue or chocolate in a bath 4 which is on wheels 9 to facilitate removal. The head 3 may be raised or lowered by hydraulic rams 6. Dust extraction or vacuum operation may be provided with the aid of hoods or seals (not shown). Motor 8 is supplied with fluid by a swashplate pump (not shown) driven by an electric motor. Rise in fluid pressure and thus motor torque above a predetermined value operates a switch to cause an electric servomotor to adjust the swash plate in such a sense as to reduce the pressure below the predetermined value. A further switch, which is operated if the current of the motor driving the pump exceeds a predetermined value, also causes the servomotor to adjust the swash plate until the motor current is reduced below the predetermined value. The servomotor may be manually switched to run in either direction to obtain a desired initial setting of the swash plate and hence speed of motor 8. Abnormal rise in fluid pressure operates a further switch to cause a solenoid valve to by-pass the output of the pump so that motor 8 is stopped and can only be re-started by hand. A manually operated emergency stop button and indicator lamp are associated with this circuit.
