Abstract

[Also in Divisions B3 and G1] An engraving machine comprises a worktable 30 mounted on a bed 11, a retractable arm 14 mounted on a carriage 13 and carrying a rod 16 which is slidable in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the table, the table being provided with guide means and means for moving the table to a number of different levels with respect to the rod 16. An engraving point 22 is attached to the rod 16, the vertical movement of which is effected by a screw 28. A screw 24 moves the carriage along a guide 10 and a screw 26 moves the arm 14 longitudinally. Locking levers 25, 27 and a locking screw 29 are provided. The means for moving the table 30, which rests on a block 31, comprises a piston-rod 33, the piston of which co-operates with a cylinder located in the bed 11. Hydraulic fluid is supplied to the cylinder from a system 21. The movement of the block 31 is guided by a pin 56 slidable on a guide 53 and bearings 54 slidable on a guide 52. A pair of springs 50 urge the block towards the guides which are secured to the mounting 12 of the machine. The means for moving the table to a number of different levels comprises four pillars 38 attached to the block 31 and slidable within sleeves in the bed 11. The pillars are provided with teeth 39 which are engaged by fingers 45 at the ends of diagonally extending rods 44 secured to a ring 43 located on the surface of the bed by a collar 42. As the table is raised, the fingers ratchet over the teeth, assisted by sloping flanks 39b of the teeth until the required height is reached whereupon the fingers engage flanks 39a of the teeth. To lower the table, the table is first slightly raised to partially disengage the teeth 39 and the fingers 45, then a spring-biased lever 46 is manually rotated anticlockwise to completely release the fingers from the teeth. The adjustments of the screws 24, 26, 28 control an indicator 18. A screw 32 is adapted to control the limited rotation of the work-table 30.
