A combined storage space heater and convector heater has a refractory heat-storage core heated by electric heaters and consisting of at least two parts 2, 3 relatively movable to open or close an air-flow passage 11 defined by said parts, the core being surrounded by thermal insulation, attached also to the movable part or parts. Figs. 2 and 3 show one arrangement wherein the core part 3 has a tapered opening therethrough to receive a correspondingly shaped core part 2 recessed at 9 to accommodate electric heaters 10 and movable vertically to define the air passage 11, Fig. 3, through which the air may circulate by either forced or natural convection as shown by the arrows. Insulation 5 surrounds the core and covers the ends of the movable core part 2. The core part 2 may be prismatic in shape (Fig. 1) or it may be a truncated cone. The core may consist of a plurality of side-by-side independently movable core parts. Fig. 5 shows another arrangement where both core pieces 13, 14 are simultaneously moved (vertically on guides 16, 17) by means of a pivoted lever arrangement 15 to open or close air passage 24 in which are located electric heaters 25, these not moving with the core pieces but remaining stationary. Insulation 18 surrounds the core. In this arrangement relatively cool air flowing through air ways 28 around the core, mixes above the core with air heated in the passage 24, the mixture exhausting from the apparatus through vent 21. Temperature regulation (not described in detail) which may be controlled in accordance with ambient tempertaure, may be effected by changing the force of air flow through the passage, altering the width of the passage and/or switching on or off some or all of the electric heating elements.
